Caring for waxed canvas bags: when and how to re-wax

Waxed canvas is one of the most durable bag materials available, and it gets better with use in a way that most synthetic materials do not. The wax coating repels water, stiffens the structure, and develops a patina over time that is genuinely attractive. But it does need occasional maintenance, and doing it wrong can leave you with a greasy, uneven mess.

How to tell when re-waxing is needed

The clearest sign is water absorption. A well-waxed canvas bag will bead water off the surface. When the canvas starts to absorb water and darken in patches rather than beading, the wax is wearing thin. This usually happens after one to two years of daily use, or faster if the bag is frequently stuffed to capacity (which stresses the weave and pushes the wax out).

Colour is another indicator. Fresh wax darkens the canvas slightly. As it wears, the fabric lightens and can look slightly dusty or dry. This is normal and not a problem until the water resistance goes.

Re-waxing at home: the process

You need a block of canvas wax (available from most outdoor or leather goods suppliers in the UK) and a warm room. Work the wax into the canvas with your fingers or a cloth, paying extra attention to seams, corners, and the base. The wax will look patchy and white at first.

Once you have covered the whole bag, use a hairdryer on a low heat setting to melt the wax into the weave. Work in sections, keeping the dryer moving. The canvas will darken and the wax will become transparent as it absorbs. Let it cool completely before using the bag.

What not to do

Do not machine wash a waxed canvas bag. The agitation strips the wax unevenly and the heat can damage the seams. Spot-clean with a damp cloth and mild soap for most marks. For mud or heavy dirt, let it dry completely first and then brush it off before wiping.

Do not store a waxed canvas bag in a sealed plastic bag or airtight container. The wax needs to breathe. A cotton dust bag or an open shelf is fine.

The Cedar Butterfly waxed canvas crossbody is designed to be re-waxed. If you are not sure whether your bag needs attention or want advice on which wax product to use, send a photo to hello@cedar-butterfly.com and Joseph will take a look.
