FAQ

Made by hand, held together by joy.

The backwards handle incident
We now check handle orientation twice before cutting anything.
Dyed the cat's bed rust
Biscuit was unimpressed. The bed is now a feature.
Sent size XS labels on XL trousers
Labelling happens last now, with the garment on a hanger.
Four failed rust dye batches
Batch five was perfect, which is why it is in the collection.
Forgot to list pocket depth
Every product page now has pocket measurements. Every single one.
Quoted a custom lead time of two weeks
It took five. We now say four to six weeks and mean it.

How this whole thing started

Joseph Hutton quit his merchandising job on a Thursday in March 2018 with no plan beyond 'I want to make things.' The first week he produced two tote bags, one of which had a handle sewn on backwards. He sold the good…

Why people keep coming back (we ask ourselves this too)

Small batches, on purpose
Each run is between 8 and 20 pieces. When they are gone, they are gone. We do not restock the same colourway twice, which keeps things interesting for everyone, including us.
Natural fabrics only
Linen, cotton, and occasional wool from small regional mills. Nothing synthetic, nothing that pills after three washes and makes you sad.
Hand-dyed in the studio
Joseph dyes most of the fabric himself using plant-based and low-impact fibre-reactive dyes. Every batch comes out slightly different. That is a feature, not a bug.
Pockets that actually work
Every garment and bag gets real, functional pockets. This is non-negotiable. We have turned down fabric because the drape was wrong for a pocket seam.
Honest sizing
Garments are graded across a wide range and described with actual measurements, not aspirational ones. If something runs narrow, we say so.

How to care for hand-dyed linen clothing

Linen is one of the most durable natural fibres you can wear, but hand-dyed linen. Especially pieces dyed with plant-based or low-impact fibre-reactive dyes. Has a few quirks that standard care labels do not always cover. Getting it wrong does not ruin a garment overnight, but it does shorten its life and dull the colour faster than it needs to.

About the place

Joseph Hutton

Founder, Established since 2018

Joseph Hutton spent eight years working as a visual merchandiser for a mid-size department store chain before he quietly quit, bought a secondhand sewing machine, and set up a folding table in his spare bedroom. He had no formal training in textiles. Just a stubborn habit of pulling apart thrift-store garments to see how they were put together. Cedar Butterfly grew out of that bedroom in 2018, one lopsided tote bag at a time. These days Joseph obsesses over natural dyes, linen weights, and the exact angle of a pocket seam. He keeps a notebook of every mistake he has made so he can make different ones next time.
